Introduction

I'm Rowena Hicks, and I've been a teacher and leader for over 30 years. I want to share my personal journey with burnout and the shame that often comes with it. My aim now is to support teachers, leaders, and school staff in overcoming burnout and thriving, and I'm doing that through my podcast.

I highlight the passion and dedication that teachers bring to their work, but I also address the common issue of feeling empty and unsupported. I share a poignant experience from my time in an inadequate school where every staff member felt unheard and desperate.

In my podcast, I focus on empowering school staff to take action for themselves. I discuss strategies for self-care, building confidence, and rediscovering the joy of teaching. I introduce my book, "Teach Flourish Thrive Break Free From Burnout," which outlines seven keys to reignite passion for teaching. Throughout the podcast, we'll explore various topics, including self-awareness, work-life balance, managing overwhelm, and improving relationships.

I acknowledge the challenges teachers face, such as workload imbalance and the impact on health and family. Drawing from my own experiences as a workaholic and people-pleaser, I encourage teachers, leaders, and staff to take bold actions. Despite my dedication to the job, I recognize the importance of maintaining a work-life balance and prioritizing self-care.

In the podcast, we promise to delve into the reasons behind these issues, addressing workload imbalances, and providing strategies for beating overwhelm. The goal is to cater to teachers, leaders, and school staff seeking solutions and bold actions. I invite you to join me on this journey of self-discovery and collaboration, offering a community-led approach to becoming the best version of yourself and rediscovering the passion for teaching.
